I firmly believe that philanthropy is a moral imperative. It is more than mere charity – it enriches the human spirit, fostering a profound sense of purpose and fulfilment. Giving back cultivates empathy and builds a more compassionate world. By supporting causes we believe in and investing in our communities, we sow the seeds for a brighter future for all.
My philanthropic journey began close to home. My children attended Turfhall Primary and Westerford High Schools in Cape Town. I supported Turfhall Primary by contributing to the construction of the school hall and other educational initiatives. At Westerford, I sponsored additional students to join my children’s school trips, including international excursions. In memory of my beloved daughter, Roseanne, I established bursary funds at both Westerford High School and Wits University.
Together with my friend, Dr Bruce Keith Adams, we established the Dr RO Dudley Memorial Fund at UCT, providing financial assistance to deserving undergraduates. This initiative remains deeply meaningful to me. My commitment to UCT extends beyond this endeavour. I am a steadfast supporter of the Neurosurgery Department, recognising the critical role it plays in advancing scientific understanding. Additionally, I honour my mentor, the late Professor JC de Villiers, through the Professor Kay de Villiers Fund at UCT.
In addition to these initiatives, I have assisted numerous other individuals (children of friends, family and colleagues) with tertiary fees and directed them in their career development.
Beyond my children’s schools, I have significantly contributed to Harold Cressy High School in District Six, Cape Town. My support includes funding for the school hall and contributions to the Harold Cressy Alumni Fund, despite not being an alumnus of the school myself.
